Serving Others

Shepherd of Life helps our community in a number of ways.  Here are some of the programs through which our members are serving others:

Arlington Life Shelter

The Arlington Life Shelter is a local organization who mission to help those in need with temporary housing and food.   Here is how they describe their work on their website:  “The Arlington Life Shelter is not just a place to stay and get a meal.  It is a place to begin removing the roadblocks and rebuilding the confidence and skills required to return to self-sufficiency.”

Shepherd of Life serves two dinner meals at the Arlington Life Shelter each week - on the first Monday of every month and on the first Thursday of every month.

Braille

In this ministry volunteers meet once-a-month to assemble Braille Bibles that get shipped all over the world.  They meet at 7pm on the third Thursday of each month at the Lutheran Braille Center 187, which is located at Grace Lutheran Church on Park Row in Arlington. This Lutheran Braille Center is one of over 200 in the United States and Canada.

2Blood Drives

About every six months Shepherd of Life participates in a blood drive for the Carter Blood Care Center. Carter brings a bus out on a Sunday morning and SOL folks sign up to give blood. It only takes about 30 minutes to give a life-sustaining gift.

Girls Inc.

This organization supports and empowers young women in our community through a variety of educational programs.  The SOL Women’s Group is very active with Girls Inc., having helped in the past year at numerous fundraisers for the group.  Just this past spring, Peggy Davidson (SOL member and President of the Women's Group) was honored as Girls Inc.'s Volunteer of the Year.

Operation Blue Lamb16

Shepherd of Life collects supplies, reading materials, and other goodies to send our service men and women overseas.  We just completed and sent off some packages which should arrive to the troops by July 4.  We’ll alert you when we start this up again in the near future.

Shepherd of Life also holds frequent collection efforts, including school supply drives for neighboring Roquemore Elementary school, and food drives for Arlington Charities.
